Viniyoga ™ is an ancient Sanskrit term that implies differentiation, adaptation, and appropriate application. It sets apart from all other forms of yoga such as Hatha, Kundalini, Bikram, and Astanga. It refers to an approach to yoga that uniquely identifies individual needs and adequately applies appropriate breath and posture adaptations and yoga tools to help the practitioner in the process of self-discovery and personal transformation.

A typical viniyoga practice may consist of yoga postures, breathing practices, use of sound, relaxation and meditation in an order that is most appropriate for the group or individual.  Depending on your age, gender, and stressors, we help you determine which tools are most appropriate.  As you transform, so will your yoga practice, keeping it fluid and dynamic.

What distinguishes Viniyoga from other forms of yoga?

Repetition and Stay
The use of repetition into and out of postures in addition to holding postures.

Function over Form
The emphasis on function rather than form in asana practice, and the science of adapting the forms of the postures to achieve different results.

Breath & Adaptation

The emphasis on breath as the medium for movement in asana, and the science of adapting the pattern of breathing in asana to produce different effects.

The Art & Science of Sequencing

The refined art and science of combination which allows teachers to create sequences of different orientation, length, and intensity to suit the intention and context of each practice.

Viniyoga Classes
“Through practice, you enter into a new relationship with yourself and your condition. On the one hand, you build the energy required to break the habits and tendencies that you know to be self-destructive. On the other hand, you are also taking concrete and effective steps to recognize your systems….if you engage in simple practices consistently, you will be amazed at their capacity to create deep change.” – Gary Kraftsow, American Viniyoga Institute.
